A Saturday Morning at Home | Danforth Documentary Family Photography Session
Some of my favourite photo sessions are built around the most ordinary days, like Saturday mornings at home.
This documentary family photography session took place at home on the Danforth in Toronto, with a family of four spending the morning exactly as they normally would. Playing, reading, running around outside, some Ms Rachel for a wind down, and getting ready for a nap.
Outside, Dad was planting new flowers in the garden, with two enthusiastic little helpers eager to join in. Bubbles floated through the yard, chalk appeared on the patio stones, and imagination took over.
We drifted naturally between activities throughout the morning, moving indoors and out as the children followed their curiosity. There was no schedule, no posing, and no pressure — just a family spending time together in a place where everyone felt comfortable.
As the session wound down, the youngest went down for a nap while the rest of the family settled into the quieter rhythm of the day. It felt like the perfect ending to a morning that reflected real family life.
These are the moments documentary family photography is designed to preserve: not special occasions or carefully planned activities, but the everyday experiences that define family life with young children. Years from now, the details may fade, but the feeling of being together will remain.
