A Three-Generation Family Photo Session at Home in Roncesvalles
This family gathered in Roncesvalles over the holidays, with out-of-town relatives visiting and three generations together under one roof — grandparents, siblings with partners, and young children ranging from 18 months to seven years old.
We began the session indoors, letting the kids ease into things with games, running laps through the house, and plenty of laughter. Photographing families at home creates space for kids to be themselves — comfortable, energetic, and fully at ease — and that tone carried through the entire session.
Once everyone bundled up, we stepped outside into the backyard for sledding and an impromptu snowball fight: kids versus adults. Some grandparents stayed warm inside, watching from the windows and enjoying the scene unfold — a perfect example of how documentary family photography captures connection even when not everyone is in the frame together.
Back indoors, the family gathered around the dining room table to make gingerbread houses. Sticky fingers, quiet concentration, and bursts of excitement filled the room as the kids worked side by side, with adults stepping in to help — or just observe. These are the kinds of moments that often pass quickly during the holidays, but mean everything in hindsight.
We finished the session with everyone together on the couch, documenting the simple but powerful fact of the entire family being home at once. No stiff posing, no pressure — just a relaxed ending to a morning that reflected real life.
Sessions like this move quickly, not because they’re rushed, but because everyone is comfortable. Kids stay engaged, adults relax, and the photos reflect what this season of family life truly felt like.
