A Documentary Newborn Session in Toronto | Toronto Family Photographer

A newborn session doesn't have to be one quick hour with everyone crowded around the baby. This family did it differently: they split it in two, so more of the people who love their new baby could be part of it.

This family asked for privacy, so I've kept images of them off this post. Respecting that is part of the job, and I'm glad to discuss more directly with anyone who's curious.

The first morning was at home, planned around the baby's naps. Grandpa came, and we spent the morning in between sleeps, in good window light with nobody in a hurry. I stayed in the background and photographed what happened. Getting the baby dressed, some time indoors and outside on the balcony allowed everyone a good ‘hold’ of the new baby.

The second morning, Grandma came, along with one sibling from each new parent. We started at home the same way, then took a walk along the waterfront and made some posed portraits of the whole group with the baby beside the pools in a downtown park.

Documentary doesn't mean nothing is ever posed. Most of a session is unposed, and when a place gives you a good setting, a few portraits are worth making. Splitting it across two days meant smaller groups, a calmer baby, and enough time for everyone to actually be there.

If you're expecting and thinking about who you'd like in the photos, get in touch. We'll work out a plan that fits your family.
