A Roncesvalles Family Story in Two Chapters

There’s something truly special about documenting a family over time—watching their story expand, little by little, with each new chapter. This Roncesvalles family session unfolded in two parts: one before the arrival of their second daughter, and one just a few weeks after she came into the world. Together, the two sessions tell the story of a family growing up, changing, and finding new rhythm.

The first session began in their home, with the kind of quiet, everyday moments that feel so personal and honest. Coffee in hand, everyone gathered around the dining room table to draw together, laughter and crayons spilling across the paper. Upstairs, their daughter led the way to her room, eager to play and show off her world before we stepped outside for a walk to their favourite local spot — Affect Coffee on Roncesvalles. A quick snack, a coffee for the parents, and some photos on a nearby bench captured their everyday rituals. We ended the morning on their front steps, a perfect backdrop for those “this is us” moments.

The second session took place four weeks after their youngest daughter was born. It was another crisp morning — but this time, their world felt just a little fuller. The family started off playing outside, with their eldest riding her bike through the alley while the dog bounded nearby. From there, we wandered to Sorauren Park, where the family picked out Halloween pumpkins together. We wrapped up back at home, in their sunlit bedroom, where I photographed the newborn surrounded by soft, morning light.

What I love about sessions like this is how they reveal the heartbeat of family life — the ordinary and the extraordinary side by side. No big productions, no stiff posing. Just a family living their story as it happens.

At Black Vine Photography, that’s exactly what I aim to capture: photographs that feel real, full of warmth and connection. This Roncesvalles session was a beautiful reminder that the most meaningful stories are often told in two parts — and they’re best documented just as they are.
